Interview with The Rasmus November 2007

Okke: Interview with Pauli and Aki 1. What is it like to work with Desmond Child and Michael Wagener? They both have worked with some amazing people. What have they taught you throughout the recording process? P: Its been highly interesting to work with Desmond. To see how he works and writes , see and learn different techniques of music composing. Expanding horizons and learning something new is one of my passions and this really has been it. ive learned to take in new things and also learned to keep my head in things that i know im good. A: It was very easy to work with M.W, While recording it was weird to have one German(he's originally from GER), one half swedish/half finnish (Harry sommerdahl) and 2 Finnish guys(me &Lauri) at the studio somewhere in the last corner of Nashville US,hehe. Extremely professional and nice guy!!! He's been around so many years, working with so many bands (metallica, skid row etc) We heard so many good stories from him!! Also some of the recording technics were a little different than we've been using before. 2. Why did you choose an American producer for this album? What are some advantages and disadvantages to working with a new producer versus working with the familiarity you had? A: Weґve been working with the same swedish producers on the last 3 albums and they've done an excellent job, but we thought that it would be time for something new. P: yeah, a rolling stone gathers no moss. we gots to keep fresh. 3. What made you decide to work on the album in Nashville instead of recording and producing it completely in Finland? A: Cause Michael Wagener has a great studio in Nashville and Desmond also lives there so it was natural, and i think it's easier to concentrate on the recordings if you do it somewhere else than in Finland. But i think Pauli and Eero felt very comfortable recording in Helsinki. P: I always thought that i dont wanna record in finland, since there is way too much temptations and excuses not to work and someone calling and asking for a coffee/lunch/friends visiting studio. But as we been touring so much, i personally felt very happy to work in finland and actually having friends over and coffee/lunch. And Of course we had to go to USA, cus they have the "american drum sound" 4. Has being in Nashville with all its music history affected the album or your views? Have you had time to see Nashville and, if so, what have you seen? Have you traveled down to Memphis to see Graceland or over to Dollywood? A: Yes, the album will have lots of country music influences...hehhe. In Nashville i was amazed how good musicians they have. In every bar there was a band playing, and they all sounded SO good. Lauri is there at the moment and he will stay there longer period, so i think he will get more out of Nashville...But what i saw and experienced was something nice and i hope to go there again. 5. I've heard you've been called an "office band" keeping a regular routine, are you keeping that type of work ethic here in The States? Could you explain a regular day "at the office"? A: Heheheheh, that was an old joke. Some years back we had our band rehearsals in the mornings and it felt like going to the office...but anyway it worked for us and we did great album after that hard work! P: its good to be office band. do work 1st with passion and relax when its relaxing time. 6. Have recent world or personal events changed any of your ideas for the album or did you have solid ideas before you headed into the studio? P: we basically never have any solid ideas about anything (as a band or as a individuals hahahaha joking joking) ...recent world and personal events inspire, change us and our music all the time. Im always terrified to go to studio and feel that all of our songs suck. but then when we got the 1st tracks down and start to visionize/visualize/hear/know/whatever the songs, then all horror is gone. the rest is just great. 7. What is the reasoning behind calling the new album "Black Roses"? Is this a working title? Is it possible it will change? A: Everythings possible....It sounds good at the moment, but you never know if it will change...What do you say?? P: well Aki, i say that thats it! Lets not change it. heheh 8. Will the album be released simultaneously worldwide or will the release be delayed in the US? A: Good question, hehehe, well i don't know, but i think that US release will be delayed... P: wow...never even thought about that...im just a songwriter and guitarist, how could i know??? 9. Do you hope to be able to tour the US with this new album? Will you attempt to tour areas of the country you haven't been before? A: Would be great to do tour in the US everywhere!!! We had great time last year when we played 4 weeks together with Lost Prophets!! P: of course 10. Recently a friend of mine sent me some video footage of the band from 1996 to 1998. How have you changed from that time? What do you miss from the early days? P: 20kg more...hahaha. i miss the innocence, and crazy braveness of exploring the world. 11. As you have grown older how has the way you have toured changed? How do you see it changing in the future? A: We love touring so I think we'll tour a lot, but maybe we will plan the tours better. P: ...getting just more diva heheh. basically we spend more time in tour bus and hotel than in own home so think its ok to want some nice comfortable touring, since is big part of life for us. 12. What is it about music that you really, truly love? A: Strong feelings that i get. P: i love everything about music. Lately im loving most writing a song and see it became alive and having its unique own feeling. Rhetorical silly question of the interview: Why do woman in Finland have to pay a euro for the public toilets when men get to use them for free?! A: You have to pay for that?!?! Didn't know, never went to one...need to try that, maybe they are cleaner... P: thats true. but finnish men dont use toilets even if its free. I'd like to give a BIG HUG and THANKS to Pauli and Aki for taking time out of their busy schedules for doing this for us. And a big THANK YOU to Kate for all her wonderful help as well. Finally, I'd like to thank all those involved with making this happen. Big hugs to you all.

Okke: Interview with Eero 2007 Maggie's (crowmaiden) questions: (can you tell that I'm the serious one ^_^ ) 1. So how's things? Life must be feeling pretty good for all of you. Do anything or go anywhere interesting in the last six months? Where did you go and what did you do? Eero:Things are good! We are preparing new songs for the new album and I think we have some great ones! In the past 6 months we got to visit U.S. and Brazil and Chile and Argentina... all of those good experiences. Brazil was interesting, first time there... Rio was beautiful with all the beaches and that... 2. So why such a long break between albums this time? Usually it seems that you only go a couple of years between them this time it is like three. E:We wanted to have a good break to write good songs. Also stuff like starting with a new producer takes some time. We also thought that it's good to keep quiet for a while so people are more interested when we come back with a brand new album. 3. We read on Myspace that you have about 30 songs to work with for the new album, did you ever think of putting out a double album or even a live one? E:We had a thought about it, but now it seems like doing just the traditional single album. 4. What kind of sound will the new album have? Will it be a rougher, less produced sound or something similar to "Hide From the Sun"? E:We are not quite sure about this yet. We have a desire to try something completely new, but we are not clear yet what it exactly will be. 5. Are you planning to record the whole thing at Dynasty Recordings or will you be traveling to Sweden again? E:We might do the record in U.S. this time... 6. Will you be working with Mikael Nord Andersson and Martin Hansen again or are you going to produce the album yourselves? If you're going to produce it yourselves what made you come to that decision? It seems that you had good chemistry with Mikael and Martin, why would you want to change things? E:We don't want to produce ourselves, but we will try something else from Mikael & Martin. I guess it's time for us to change our methods a little. 7. What was the last movie you saw and would you recommend it to anyone? E:I think I saw "Inconvenient Truth", I recommend it, it's even quite shocking! 8. Name you favorite band of all time and the top five songs from them that you think everyone should listen to. E:Nirvana Heart Shaped Box Lithium In Bloom All Apologies Dumb 9. What exactly do you do with the gifts that fans give you? Especially if the gift is somewhat unique or original. E:I try to keep what I can use and try to give things that I can't use for people who need. Sometimes the gifts can be very useful stuff like good music or some self-made handicrafts like a woolen cap 10. Why is it when you are looking for something it is always in the last place that you look? E:Because there wouldn't be any fun in finding things otherwise Nicole's (gitawolf) Questions: On the lighter side... 1. Have you ever thought of doing a concept album? If so, what would it be about? (I had to ask one semi serious one!) E:Well yes, but we didn't come up with the right concept yet. Let's keep this idea in our minds. 2. What is your favourite international slag word or phrase? ( e.g. The Aussie's "going off like a frog in a sock" is a personal favourite.) E:"disappears like a grandma into the fog" 3. Ever talk on the phone and use the toilet at the same time? And did the person you were talking to get mad when they found out? E:Yes, many times. people tend not to get offended. 4. Do you like your toes? E:One of them is quite ugly, the right index one 5. Name a trait you look for in a friend. E:Honesty 6. I can't draw no matter how hard I try and I am envious of anyone that can. is there something that other people can do that you are envious of? E:Cooking, acting, writing, but most of all giving a good inspiring speech. I think this might be the most important quality in any person who can lead others. 7. What do you look for in a couch? E:Comfort 8. Do you still have any toys from your childhood? If so, what? E:Not really, only my guitar. 9. If you lick something do you consider it yours? E:If you talk about food, yes. 10. What do you hate doing when people are watching you? E:Eating, peeing Bonus tourist question! Say someone was going to Finland for 2 weeks in the summer and wanted sit in a boat, pick berries, you know be Finnish – what location in Finland would you recommend? E:There must be many, to hire a cottage for example, in Hirvensalmi? Bianca's (Kissa-Rakastaja's) Questions: We asked on the US forum for some fun questions to ask you guys. These are some of the ones that Kissa sent in that made us laugh. Some are a bit rhetorical but have a go at them anyway! Cheers! - Nic & Mag 1. How is it that we put men on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? E:We used to have servants?? 2. Why do people point to their wrist when asking for the time, but don't point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is? (From now on I am doing this!) E:Good idea! 3. If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? E:For the touch of it? 4. If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhoea...Does that mean the fifth one enjoys it? E:Or enjoys watching the 4 other ones? 5. What is the most edible thing in the room right now? E:Apple pie 6. Craving you have most often (besides sex)? E:Good radio with music and good topics. 7. E:Over 9. What is your least favourite smell? E:Melting snow and the surprises under it. 10. If you could change the position of any 2 parts of your body, where would you put them? E:I would exchange places of my thumbs. I'd like to thank Eero for taking time out of his busy schedule for doing this for us. And thank you to Kissa for all the wonderful questions that she had. they were so good we couldn't pass them up. Finally I'd like to thank all those involved with making this happen. Big hugs to you all.
